Social & Literacy Development Association (SLDA) was formed in 1985 by representatives of women and youth groups in Lucknow and aims at contributing to improving the quality of life of the community in the unorganized sections and their family members specially in rural areas through its various programmes. Social & Literacy Development Association, U.P. is committed to the cause of developing social, intellectual, vocational and occupational skills and thus improving the overall personality of the poors and against the backdrop that development opportunities for rural development abound under Uttar Pradesh decentralization system, yet majority of the rural communities lack development due to their inability to utilize them.
With over 34 years of community service, the organization has grown from a community-based organization to a non-profit NGO, operating in the thematic areas of education, human rights and environment. It seeks to create a future of hope for under-served children, women and their communities by helping them to build their skills and resources to reduce their vulnerability in a sustainable way. Social & Literacy Development Association is engaged in promoting education, skill development, women and child development, help to aged, welfare of minorities, social, educational, cultural, economic, welfare and vocational, income generating training programmes for the messes at large in order to develop and improve physical, intellectual, vocational, occupational skill efficiency personality and well being of the community.
SLDA has a nine-member Board of Directors that accesses the progress of the organization, make strategic decisions and look at program and administrative issues. The organization operates with 40 staff, comprising 15 full-time, 5 part-time workers and 20 volunteers. It also provides opportunity for community volunteers and students on internship to learn and participate in its activities.
